Indpendent and Dependent Events
Chapter 10-4
2
Geometric Probability
compound event A __________________ _____________ consists of two or more simple events. events independent Events A and B are ______________ _________ if the probability that A occurs does not affect the probability that B occurs. dependent events Events A and B are ______________ _________ if the probability that A occurs in some way changes the probability that B occurs.

Independent vs Dependent Events
Determine whether the events are dependent or independent One coin is tossed, and then a second coin is tossed. A teacher is drawing student names for class prizes. She draws Karen’s name, and does not replace her in the drawing. Wednesday’s lottery numbers and Sunday’s lottery numbers. A card is chosen from a complete deck of cards, not replaced, then a second card is selected.

Example 1 Brian draws first and keeps his slip of paper, and Kevin draws second. What is the probability that both of the boys will ride in the car to the concert? Korri and her friends are going to a concert in Tyler, Tx. They put slips of paper (6 – yellow, 4 – blue) into a bag and draw these randomly. If you draw a yellow slip of paper, you will ride in a van to the concert. If you draw a blue slip of paper, you will ride in a car to the concert. Korri first draws a blue slip of paper. Not liking that selection, she replaces the paper and quickly draws again. What is the probability that she will draw another blue slip of paper?

Example 2 A card is drawn randomly from a deck of 52 cards, replaced, and a second card is drawn. A. What is the probability of choosing spades both times? B. What is the probability of choosing a red card both times? C. What is the probability of choosing a face card both times? D. What is the probability of choosing a face card and then a diamond?

Example 3 A card is drawn randomly from a deck of 52 cards, replaced, and a second card is drawn. A. What is the probability of choosing spades both times? B. What is the probability of choosing a red card both times? C. What is the probability of choosing a face card both times? D. What is the probability of choosing a face card and then a diamond?

Example 4 The student council is giving out campaign buttons to the student body. They have 20 blue buttons, 15 white buttons, 25 red buttons, 10 black buttons. a. What is the probability that the first two buttons randomly handed out are both red. b. What is the probability that the first 4 buttons will be either black or white? c. What is the probability that the first 3 buttons will not be red?
