2 Definition of Work According to the dictionary work is defined as “exertion or effort directed to produce or accomplish something; labor, toil”

3 Definition of Work In physics, work is defined as “a transfer of energy.” It is calculated with the formula W=Fd where W=Work, F=Force and d=distance.

4 Measuring Work We measure work in joules (J)
Remember: work is not done without motion! And you need a FORCE for motion to occur!

6 Simple Machines In physics, a simple machine is a type of device that requires application of one force. Work is done with the force applied to the simple machine causes movement.

7 Pulley A pulley is a wheel rotating on a rope or chord.
In a pulley the rope is pulled and the wheel rotates. Examples include a flagpole and the weight sets in the fitness center.

8 Inclined Plane An inclined plane is a flat surface often placed when needing to move a height. Examples include ramps and loading docks.

9 Wedge Using the pointed edge an inclined plane can create a wedge.
A wedge is used to push things apart. Wedges include axes

10 Screw An inclined plane that is wrapped around a cylinder.
A screw can be used to put things together.

11 Lever A lever is an arm that pivots on a fulcrum.
Examples include a crowbar, seesaw and the claw end of a hammer.

12 Wheel and Axel A type of lever that moves objects a distance.
The wheel turns the axel. Examples include a water wheel or wheel on a motorcycle.
