Directions for Vocabulary Pyramid for Gr 3--3.5E
This powerpoint contains 2 slides. One can be used to model the activity, using fruit as non-threatening vocabulary for practice of the expectations for the game. When you run the powerpoint, students pair up as Student A and Student B, with only Student A sitting to be able to see the powerpoint slide as the teacher uncovers words with a click on one rectangle at a time. Using descriptions, examples, non-examples, etc, Student A tries to get Student B to guess the word. When Student B guesses the correct word, Student A stands up and says “woo-hoo” and sits down again to repeat the process with the next uncovered word. By walking around and listening to vocabulary and “woo-hoos” the teacher can determine the extent of vocabulary fluency. For a written evaluation, you can ask student to write about a word they understand totally—and why. Then list a word that they are going to keep working on because they do not quite understand it. Try a variation of this chart for words they are still working on, words that are getting there, and words they have got!
