1 Honors Earth/Environmental Science
Water Pollution Honors Earth/Environmental Science

2 Sources of Pollution #1 source worldwide is raw sewage
Mostly in underdeveloped countries In developed countries Municipal pollution Industrial pollution Agricultural pollution

3 Municipal Pollution Main sources
Untreated sewage (includes septic tanks) Storm drains Yard products (fertilizer, herbicides)

4 Industrial Pollution From factories, hospitals, etc.
Heavy metals (mercury, lead, etc.) Chemicals from fossil fuels (sulfur, etc.) Heated water from power stations

5 Agricultural Pollution
From raising crops and animals Fertilizer and pesticides Animal wastes

6 Effects of Pollution Extra nutrients cause excess algae and plant growth This causes a decrease in the amount of oxygen in water Decreased oxygen causes native animal life to die Result is called a dead zone

7

8

9 Thermal Pollution Water added to rivers and lakes that has changed in temperature Hot water coming from power plants cooling down equipment Cold water comes from reservoirs behind dams Both can harm wildlife that need certain temperatures of water

10 Water Treatment Two processes in producing drinkable water:
Sewage treatment Removing contaminants, solids, wastes Water purification Removing bacteria, chemicals, viruses, fungi, etc.

11 Individuals and Water Quality
Recycle and dispose of chemicals properly Use limited lawn and garden chemicals Do not let vehicles leak fluids on the ground Keep waste out of storm drains

12 Ways To Conserve Water Use better irrigation methods for gardens
Install low-flow showerheads and toilets Turn off water when not using and take shorter showers Always keep water use in mind
