The Rainstick Making and playing the RAINSTICK Markus Mõttus – student

Learning method Project learning through different subjects.
Making an instrument called the “Rainstick” Subjects: handicraft, music, history and geography. It is meant for age of 10 – 15. Materials: nails, cardboard, ducktape, coloured tape and paper.

What is it? The rainstick is a long, hollow tube partially filled with small pebbles or beans that have small pins or thorns arranged helically on its inside surface.

How did we make it? We pushed nails into the tube.
We put the noisemakers inside… The colours and the stripes are inspired by our national clothes.

How does it make a sound? When the stick is upended, the pebbles fall to the other end of the tube, making a sound of rain falling.

Who invented it? The rainstick is believed to have been invented by the Aztecs and was played in the belief it could bring rainstorms.

Playing the rainstick 6th form students are singing a song about the rain.
