2 What is the Antarctic Treaty?
HOME The Antarctic Treaty provides future care and safe use of Antarctica, it also encourages and supports scientific activity. It has regulations that help protect the animals and land. It prohibits military activity, nuclear explosions and disposal of nuclear waste. The area of the treaty covers everywhere south of 60° South Latitude, including ice shelves and islands.

3 What is the purpose of the Antarctic treaty?
The main purpose of the Antarctic Treaty is to ensure: "in the interests of all mankind that Antarctica shall continue forever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and shall not become the scene or object of international discord.” – Text from the Treaty. This means Antarctica shall not be the centre of war or conflict. HOME

4 Failed attempts at the Treaty
HOME The Treaty signed with Germany in a suburb of Paris at the ending the First World War. Serious problems with Republicans and a presidential failure to compromise ended with the rejection of the treaty by the Senate, Woodrow Wilson. (Senate: elected to represent a state or territory). When the Treaty was voted down for the last time dream of a new world order died.

5 What would be the consequences if the treaty is not followed?
HOME If the Treaty is not followed, Antarctica would be the centre of conflict and destruction. Poaching would continue and cause many species of animals to be extinct. Animals being extinct would disrupt the food chain and cause other animals that feed on the said animals to possibly become extinct as well. Antarctica would be changed as it’s beautiful landscape would most likely be destroyed and the scientific information would become harder to come by.

6 What are some environmental issues that are impacting Antarctica?
Antarctica is often thought of by humans as remaining in pure state, untouched by human disturbance - This is wrong. Some human impacts include: -Harvesting some Antarctic species to the verge of extinction for economic benefit. -Killing and disturbing other species -Contaminating the soils -Discharging sewage to the sea and leaving rubbish, cairns and tracks in even the most remote parts. Global Warming also has an effect on Antarctica. HOME

7 What should people visiting Antarctica consider?
Antarctica is probably one of the most untouched and unusual places in the world to visit. Many people want to see and experience the marvellous sights of Antarctica. People visiting Antarctica should consider; The animals living there and their environments Pollution and how they can prevent how much they contribute to it Safety!
