1 As a collaborative philosophical researcher
My role………….. As a collaborative philosophical researcher

2 collaborative philosophical researcher.
I believe my key role as practice based researcher is to be a…………. collaborative philosophical researcher. In my assignment I talk in detail about collaborative working. In this presentation I will talk about my passion ……………………………

3 Philosophy

4 “A philosopher looks at the world in wonder
“A philosopher looks at the world in wonder. He seeks the underlying meaning of things; he wants to understand it and codify it into a system of thought” (Justarius.2007) In my opinion a researcher should look at the world in wonder, Seek meaning and look for the reasons why things happen. In this way a philosopher and a researcher are very similar. No two philosophers are the same and one can not be described as “better” than any other. I believe this is the same for researchers. Now I will look at some key philosophical quotes and link them to research……………………………………………….

5 The founding father of Philosophy is Socrates so we will start with him…..
‘Know thyself’ As we found out last semester to be an effective reflective practitioner we need to know ourselves. We need to know our strengths, weaknesses, biases and beliefs. To be an effective researcher we need to know the same. We need to recognise that who we are will have an effect on the research.

6 “I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance”
We all have gaps in our knowledge. Nobody can truly know it all. “It is a fool who believes himself to be a wise man, as a wise man knows himself to be a fool”. After recognising the fact of our ignorance/ gaps in our knowledge we can then set about researching and improving.

7 Plato “That man is wisest who, like Socrates, realizes that his wisdom is worthless” As Carla Solveson says we need to “Hold knowledge lightly”. We need to recognise that in the early years world the sands are always shifting. There is always new knowledge, ideas, guidance and curriculum's to follow. Each day we will be required to adapt what we think we know and improve our overall knowledge. By doing research we create new knowledge which will either change or compliment the knowledge we already have.

8 "All learning has an emotional base."
I would say every thought and aspect of our lives has an emotional base. Neuroscientists recently discovered that the brain evolved an emotional base before a learning and cognitive area. Emotions impact what we research, how we research and the results of our research (if we are not careful). We need to recognise that our emotional state or emotional connections can impact our thoughts and interactions with others. This can be conscious or unconscious. Plato

9 “One cannot step twice in the same river”
Heraclitus “One cannot step twice in the same river” I love this phrase. AS mentioned previously the sand around our feet is constantly changing, we as professionals are evolving and changing minute by minute and as human beings our moods and feelings are constantly in flux. This means we could never hope to be the same minute to minute. Through research we can take some ownership for the change that is happening and make a difference to the lives of individuals.

10 “The mind is furnished with ideas by experience alone”
John Locke “The mind is furnished with ideas by experience alone” I see a lot of links between action research and experiential learning. Research is only useful if it is relevant to your own experiences and practices. If you want to truly learn something then you should experience it and researching gives us the opportunity to do just that. “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” Benjamin Franklin

11 Yoda “Always pass on what you have learned”
We have a responsibility to pass on knowledge to others. We are not islands and do not operate in isolated ways, we need to share knowledge and learning. I see it as one of my key roles as a leader to support trainees in developing their practice. I do not tell them what to do but instead give them the opportunity to research and learn. By researching we experience, sometimes fail, critically think, achieve and learn.

12 You are a philosopher Carl Sagan
And finally ……………… Carl Sagan “Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known” We should be considering ourselves as researchers but I believe we should also see ourselves as philosophers. Philosophers are not old, bearded men who have been to University for years. You and Me are philosophers. Critically thinking, asking big questions and considering ways we can improve our lives and the lives of ourselves You are a philosopher
