Ares Patron God of Sparta
Since Sparta was a warrior state, Ares, the god of war was their patron god.

Spartan Children At birth they were examined and it was decided whether or not a child would live or die. Only the strongest babies were permitted to live. Weak babies were “exposed” and put on a hill to die.

Spartan Boys Spartan boys went to the Agoge at the age of (7) to begin training to become a Spartan soldier. It was a rigorous (12) years of schooling that focused on discipline , toughness, and military training.

Spartan Men All male citizens trained to become Spartan soldiers.
A soldier’s duty was to protect and extend the power of Sparta.

Spartan Soldier Only soldiers killed in battle or women who died during childbirth were given a headstone at their funeral. In Sparta the emphasis was on serving the city and not the family.

Spartan Women Women and girls were encouraged to learn how to read and write, and to play an instrument and sports. The goal for females was to be strong women, so they could produce strong Spartan children.

Spartan Government Sparta had an oligarchy which is rule by a few.
Ancient Sparta was ruled by 2 kings, an assembly or law making body, and 5 ephors or overseers that balanced the power between the king and the people. You did not have the right to vote. Kings controlled Sparta during times of war. The assembly and ephors controlled Sparta in times of peace.
