3. Introduction
Fire is one of the most common serious hazards that you can face in a typical workplace.
This program will teach you the basics about fire extinguishers - proper types, how to use them, when and when not to use them as well as the proper procedures to follow should a fire occur. It is not a comprehensive guide; rather a general study for most situations.

4. How Does a Fire Work? Three components
Need all three components to start a fire
Fire extinguishers remove one or more of the components

5. Types of Fires Class A - Wood, paper, cloth, trash
Class B - Flammable liquids, oil, gas, grease
Class C - Electrical, energized electrical equipment

6. The 4 most common types of fire extinguishers are:
1. All Purpose Water
a) Water fire extinguishers are only suitable for Class A (solid burning) fires. Using water to cool and therefore extinguish the fire is the simplest way to combat fires.
b) However, water is not safe to use on any other class of fire.
2. Carbon Dioxide
a) CO2 (carbon dioxide) extinguishers are for class B and C fires. They don't work very well on class A fires because the material usually reignites.
b) Note that CO2 is a bad choice to use for flammable metal fires because CO2 reacts with these materials. CO2 extinguishers are not approved for class D fires!
3. Multi-Purpose Dry Chemical
a) Dry chemical extinguishers are useful for either class ABC or class BC fires (check the
label) and are your best all around choice for common fire situations. They have an
advantage over CO2 and "clean agent" extinguishers in that they leave a blanket of non-
flammable material on the extinguished material which reduces the likelihood of reigni-
tion. They also make a terrible mess – but if the choice is a fire or a mess, take the mess!
b) Note that there are two kinds of dry chemical extinguishers:
Type BC fire extinguishers contain sodium or potassium bicarbonate.
Type ABC fire extinguishers contain ammonium phosphate.
4. Halon
a) Halon extinguishers leave no residue. Used in computer server rooms.
Each kind of extinguisher has a specific use!

10. Halon
A halogenated fire extinguisher does not spray solid materials that will be left behind once the fire is out.
Other aerosol safe agents are also available that do not harm sensitive computer equipment.

11. How to Use a Fire Extinguisher
Use the P.A.S.S. Method
First Step is:
Pull the pin
This will allow you to squeeze the handle in order to discharge the extinguisher

12. Aim at the base of the fire
The 2nd Step
Aim at the base of the fire
Aiming at the middle will do no good.
The agent will pass through the flames.

13. Squeeze the handle The 3rd Step This will release the pressurized
extinguishing agent

14. Sweep side to side The 4th and Final Step
Cover the entire area that is on fire. Continue until fire is extinguished. Keep an eye on the area for re-lighting.

15. When NOT to Fight a Fire!
Don’t have the proper extinguisher or equipment
Fire has spread beyond its point of origin
Your instincts tell you to get out
Remember to keep an exit to your back
Attempt only to extinguish small fires (waste basket sized or smaller).

16. Evacuation Procedures
In the Event of Fire
ALWAYS ENSURE YOUR OWN SAFETY FIRST!
Under most emergency response procedures, sound the facility alarm and exit the building. Move to the exterior assembly area.
If you hear an alarm
DO NOT
assume it is a drill,
your life may depend on it!

17. Evacuation Procedures
Building Evacuation
Proceed to nearest exit in an orderly fashion
Provide emergency crews with information about the reason for the evacuation and any people still in the building
Never leave or re-enter a building until instructed to by the police department, fire department, or EHS staff.

Utility Pole Fires
Welding
Hydraulic oil
Grass fires
Microwave ovens
Popcorn makers
Candles and portable heaters
If you are outdoors during a fire you can decrease your exposure risks by keeping smoke drift upwind (wind at your back). When fighting fires with a fire extinguisher be sure the wind is to your back.

19. Other Important Fire Extinguisher Tips
Know the location of the nearest fire extinguisher(s) in your work area
Keep the area around the fire extinguisher clear and easily accessible
All fire extinguishers are required by OSHA to be inspected monthly to ensure they are in proper working condition
Notify management if and when damaged or faulty extinguishers are found
