1
The Mole & Avogadro’s Number Notes
CP Chemistry
2
Counting Units 1 dozen = 12 (eggs, donuts) 1 ream = 500 (paper)
1 pair = 2 (shoes)
3
Counting Atoms (Molecules)
Atoms and molecules are so tiny that chemists use the mole to count them One Mole contains 6.02 x 1023 atoms 602,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 6.02 x 1023 = Avogadro’s number
4
How big is a mole? One mole of popcorn would cover every dry surface of the Earth to a depth of six miles One mole of stacked pennies would reach to the moon and back 16 times One mole of marshmallows would cover the U.S. to a depth of 650 miles
5
Moles Particles Conversions
Atoms, molecules x 6.02 x 1023 ÷ 6.02 x 1023 Moles
6
Example Conversions 3.5 moles to atoms 18.06 x 1023 atoms to moles
2.7 moles to particles 4.32 x 1024 atoms to moles
