PLASMIDS ...and genetic engineering.

What is a plasmid? A small circular, double stranded piece of DNA that can enter and exit prokaryotic cells. It can replicate when inside a suitable host. (i.e. a prokaryotic cell)

What is its purpose? Genetic engineers use plasmids as vectors to transfer genes from one organism to another This technique is used to multiply or express particular genes An example of this technique is in the production of insulin

a) non-integrating b) The plasmids integrate into the host cell’s chromosome (i.e. viruses)
