On March 4, 1681, Charles II of England granted the Province of Pennsylvania to William Penn to settle a £16,000 (around £2,100,000 in 2008, adjusting for retail inflation) debt the king owed to Penn's father. Penn founded a proprietary colony that provided a place of religious freedom for Quakers.

The Pennsylvania Colony was classified as one of the Middle Colonies. The Province of Pennsylvania was an English colony in North America that existed from 1682 until 1776, when it joined the other 12 of the 13 colonies in rebellion against Great Britain and became the U.S. state of Pennsylvania.
