Role of Instructor TO PROMOTE AND TO MEASURE SUCCESSFUL LEARNING Sgt Hall (ATC) 2359 (Woolton) Squadron

5 Role of Instructor Things to consider Preparation - you and the room.
Presentation - discussion more stimulating than a lecture. Visual aids - important stimuli - aid to the instructor. Classroom management - physical environment distractions, best position of students. Sgt Hall (ATC) 2359 (Woolton) Squadron

6 Lecture vs Lesson Task: Discuss what is the difference between a lecture and a lesson? Lecture – someone talks AT you Lesson – someone engages WITH you Sgt Hall (ATC) 2359 (Woolton) Squadron

7 Why lessons? Lesson structured to the age and ability of the class.
Feedback obtained to remedy learning difficulties. Questions to maintain interest. Active participation by class. Sgt Hall (ATC) 2359 (Woolton) Squadron

8 Effective Instruction
Student involvement / motivation Feedback – student / instructor A structured theory lesson fulfils both elements Sgt Hall (ATC) 2359 (Woolton) Squadron

9 Classroom Management Problem Cadets ‘Bolshie’ ‘Star Pupil’
Awkward/uncooperative. Find out why and try to get them interested ‘Star Pupil’ Knows the subject. Acknowledge ability, but use sparingly for questions ‘Know-it-all’ Think they know it all, but don’t actually know it. Give hard questions and demand good answers Sgt Hall (ATC) 2359 (Woolton) Squadron

10 Classroom Management Problem Cadets ‘Slow-coach’ ‘Sleepy’
Genuinely slow, or not trying? If genuine, give extra help If not genuine, give more activity/questions to encourage participation ‘Sleepy’ Not participating and not concentrating Give more involvement Make sure your subject delivery is not to blame Sgt Hall (ATC) 2359 (Woolton) Squadron

11 Classroom Management Problem Cadets
In all cases, determine the reason for the problem May not be connected to the lesson or the ATC Only try to solve the problem once the cause is known Sgt Hall (ATC) 2359 (Woolton) Squadron

12 Components Fairy Tale vs Structured Theory Lesson
Beginning Introduction Middle Development Happy Ever After Consolidation Sgt Hall (ATC) 2359 (Woolton) Squadron

13 Setting Objectives An objective is a PRECISE statement of what a student MUST do to show what they have learnt It should contain a statement of the CONDITIONS under which the PERFORMANCE must be carried out and the STANDARD to be ACHIEVED.
