We’ll meet the sun again later this year…

YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW THIS DIAGRAM

Tidally locked? - synchronous rotation
The Earth and moon to scale… The Moon orbits Earth in the prograde (the same way) direction and completes one revolution relative to the stars in approximately days (a sidereal month). On average, the Moon is at a distance of about 385,000 km (239,000 mi) from Earth's centre, which corresponds to about 60 Earth radii. The gravitational attraction that the Moon exerts on Earth is the cause of tides in the sea; the Sun has a lesser tidal influence. Tidally locked? - synchronous rotation

ANOTHER HELPFUL DIAGRAM

Origin of the Moon DRAW A TRIPTYCH (a work of art (usually a panel painting) that is divided into three sections – tell a story) Due Wednesday Put effort into your work!
11
The three panels represent, from left to right, the donors kneeling in prayer in a garden, the moment before the Annunciation to Mary, set in a contemporary, middle class, domestic setting, and Saint Joseph, a carpenter, with the tools of his trade. An example…

Tides Gravity is a major force that creates tides.
Tides are one of the most reliable phenomena in the world. As the sun rises in the east and the stars come out at night, we are confident that the ocean waters will regularly rise and fall along our shores. Tides Basically, tides are very long-period waves that move through the oceans in response to the forces exerted by the moon and sun. Tides originate in the oceans and progress toward the coastlines where they appear as the regular rise and fall of the sea surface.

Solar Eclipses “Label the parts of a (blank) eclipse and draw the moon's location during a Solar and a Lunar eclipse…”
14
This shows the geometry of a lunar eclipse
This shows the geometry of a lunar eclipse. When the Sun, Earth, and Moon, are precisely aligned, a lunar eclipse will occur. During an eclipse the Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the Moon. Earth creates two shadows: the outer, pale shadow called the penumbra, and the dark, inner shadow called the umbra. The eclipse is noticeable once the Moon enters the umbra. Lunar Eclipses

Exoplanets (planets outside our solar system that orbit a star)
How many exoplanets has Kepler and K2 discovered? Kepler mission: Candidate exoplanets: 4,496 Confirmed exoplanets: 2,337 Confirmed exoplanets less than twice Earth-size in the habitable zone: 30 K2 mission: Candidate exoplanets: 521 Confirmed exoplanets: 157 Confirmed detections began in 1992. SO COOL!

Light Years What is a light-year and how is it used?
A light-year is a unit of distance. It is the distance that light can travel in one year. Light moves at a velocity of about 300,000 kilometers (km) each second. So in one year, it can travel about 10 trillion km. In our solar system, we tend to describe distances in terms of the Astronomical Unit (AU). The AU, however, is not big enough of a unit when we start talking about distances to objects outside our solar system.
17
Light Years con’t Why would you want such a big unit of distance?
In the universe, the kilometer is just too small to be useful. The Milky Way Galaxy is about 150,000 light-years across.
