Band Myths WARNING!! Everything you heard may not be true!
5
Myth #1 Musical Background Required?
Everyone can learn an instrument if they try! We will teach all comers!
6
Myth # 2 BAND TAKES TOO MUCH TIME
There are many levels of band and commitment Practice according to personal goals Afterschool= Zero the first year. After the first year, the commitment level depends on the level of student achievement.
7
Myth #3 PRE-AP & BAND IS TOO MUCH!!!
Most band kids are enrolled in at least one PRE-AP class. Several students in our top ensembles take all PRE-AP and are in NJHS!
8
We (directors/sponsors) all share the same kids b/t activities
Myth #4 I won’t be able to play sports or be a part of other activities A large % of our students do band, athletics, theater, choir, art, cheer, SciOly, and more! We (directors/sponsors) all share the same kids b/t activities
9
Myth #5 BAND COSTS TOO MUCH MONEY
School Owned Instruments available** Instrument Rentals+ Gently Used Not all supplies are mandatory. We will let you know what is necessary How much? **certain conditions apply +CRJH does not rent instruments Local music stores, family/friends, pawn shops (Maybe?). Please see director for more info. We will never keep a student from band due to Finances

usually the best option
INSTRUMENT RENTAL usually the best option CRJH BAND DOES NOT RENT BAND INSTRUMENTS BUT… *KISD offers certain instruments for use. These are instruments that are typically too expensive for home purchase. These include, Oboe, Bassoon, Fr. Horn, Euphonium and Tuba. *There is an annual maintenance fee associated with these instruments.
11
Please do not purchase an instrument before your interview.
Local Music vendors have all of our instrument and accessory preference information Please do not purchase an instrument before your interview.
12
WHAT IS AN INSTRUMENT INTERVIEW?
A min 1 on 1 session where an experienced band director will talk to you and your child about their instrument interest and desires for band. Students will have the opportunity to have a “crash course” on the instrument in which the student is interested, and/or directors suggestion. In most cases you will leave your interview knowing the instrument you will play and info on securing that instrument. Percussion and Saxophone placement/confirmation will require a follow up interview or call back. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please trust the directors to help finalize your decision to make your band experience great. BE OPEN MINDED!! Students of “all shapes and sizes” can be successful on any particular instrument.

Practice Reports WHY PRACTICE?
The same reason why Basketball players practice shooting free throws. Learning to play an instrument is about muscle development too! We also need to be ready for the big game (Performance) WHEN TO PRACTICE? Everyday, every other day, 5 times a week? YES! Practicing is not always fun, but you must develop the habit of practicing, much like brushing your teeth. The more you do it, the more you will make it a part of your routine. HOW LONG? 10-30 minutes a session. No Cramming! Less time over the entire week is better than long practice sessions less often. Practice the amount of time you need to achieve your goals.
