Basic Rules Follow ALL instructions given in the lab.
Read the lab procedure BEFORE lab and KNOW the procedure. ASK before ACTION….if you are unsure about how to do a procedure. ASK! NO food, drink, or gum ! !

Basic Rules (cont.) 5) Keep your lab area clean and free of clutter. 6) Do NOT work by yourself ! 7) Know what happens if a fire drill occurs during lab. 8) NO HORSEPLAY IN THE LAB!!!!

Basic Rules (cont.) 9) BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS!!!! 10) Follow proper waste disposal (not everything can go down the sink, if you are not sure—ASK)

What should I wear ??? Close-toed shoes Hair tie for long hair
Lab apron/coat Gloves Goggles—at ALL TIMES! (if caught without, sing the song!)

Handling chemicals…. Consider ALL chemicals as dangerous.
LABEL all glassware containing chemicals with formula/name and concentration. DO NOT place extra chemicals back into original container. (check the labeled container to be sure you have the correct chemical)

KNOW where MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) sheets are located. What do these sheets contain? Why are they important? Keep face, mouth, nose, and body away from chemicals. NEVER smell, touch or taste a chemical ! ! ! When transferring liquids, keep glassware safety on the lab surface.

NEVER have a flammable liquid near an open flame/heat source. NEVER take chemicals outside of the lab area. Acids—extreme caution. ALWAYS pour ACID into WATER ! ! ! (follow ABCs)

Heating Substances When using a heat source, SLOWLY increase the temperature and distribute EVENLY on the chemical. Do not look directly at a heat source ! Allow time for a chemical to cool before handling.

Accidents/Injuries INFORM THE TEACHER IMMEDIATELY ! ! (broken glass, inury, etc.) Know the location of the eye wash, safety shower, fire blanket, and fire extinguisher. 20 MINUTE RULE.

Chemical Disposal Follow ALL disposal instructions at the end of lab.
Leave the lab area clean. (Clean all glassware and equipment) Wash hands thoroughly with soap AFTER lab.

Have Fun! BUT always be aware of what is going on in lab and where your peers are !!!
