Aim: How do we compare the spheres of the Earth?
Do Now: Describe one piece of evidence we know the Earth rotates.
2
The Three Spheres of Earth Activity
You will have 10 minutes to read about “The Three Spheres of Earth.” Highlight or underline key terms and facts that describe each sphere. You will create a word web by filling in all the branches of your web with key terms or facts about each sphere from what you gathering from your reading. Lithosphere Hydrosphere Atmosphere

How do we describe the lithosphere?
Solid Layer Continuous bedrock shell around the earth Most dense Solid rock material under ocean sediments Composed of Rock and Soil Lithosphere Known as the Crust Has other elements – aluminum, iron, calcium, sodium Oxygen and Silicon – 2 most abundant elements Thickness from 72 to 153 kilometers

How do we describe the hydrosphere?
Liquid Layer 99% salt water & 1% fresh water Oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, & groundwater Water composed of 33% oxygen and 66% hydrogen Oceans average depth of 3-5 km Hydrosphere Earth’s thinnest layer Cover’s 70% of Earth’s surface Less dense than the lithosphere

How do we describe the Atmosphere?
Gas Layer Troposphere contains the most mass of the atmosphere Consists of 4 layers – troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere Atmosphere (Troposphere) Troposphere- temperature decreases with increasing altitude Least dense of all the spheres We live in the troposphere layer (lowest layer) Air mixture consists of 78% Nitrogen and 21% Oxygen Troposphere - only layer that contains water vapor and weather conditions
