Life on plantations remained nearly the same Small farms changed. Women and children had to work the crops and tend the land because most men were away at war. Women from Texas also served as nurses on both sides of the war.

Government encouraged farmers to plant corn and wheat. Cotton production declined Factories were opened to make goods needed for war (cannons, ammunition, blankets, shoes, saddles) Women took jobs as teachers, shopkeepers, and drivers
