Clothing was made of homespun because of the Union blockades Texans experiments with local plants instead of tea and coffee Medicine was almost impossible to get because it was needed for the soldiers.

Edward Clark completes Houston’s Term Houston refuses to take Oath Election of 1862 Clark is defeated by Francis R. Lubbock Election of 1863 Pendleton Murrah is elected governor

Life on plantations remained nearly the same Small farms changed. Women and children had to work the crops and tend the land because most men were away at war. Women from Texas also served as nurses on both sides of the war.

Government encouraged farmers to plant corn and wheat. Cotton production declined Factories were opened to make goods needed for war (cannons, ammunition, blankets, shoes, saddles) Women took jobs as teachers, shopkeepers, and drivers
