1. Causes of the Revolution
Revolution of 1905 failed to solve Russia’s problems. -Peasants live in extreme poverty. -Czar Nicholas II had a luxurious lifestyle (yachts, palaces, trains, Faberge eggs) -World War I- poorly equipped- food and fuel shortages. -Similar to causes of French Revolution

2. Results of the Revolution
1. Russia becomes the first Communist country in the world. -Lenin and the Bolsheviks take power- dictatorship. -Russia withdraws from World War I. -Industry is nationalized (government owned).

3A. Lenin Lenin- Not a Marxist Revolution- not enough industrial workers (mostly farmers). -New Economic Policy (NEP)- introduced limited capitalism. Farmers can sell their surplus.

3B. Stalin Stalin- 5 Year Plan- goal to industrialize.
-Purges- executes those who oppose him. -Glorification- statues, pictures. -Collectivization- put farmers on government owned farms- killed livestock and burned crops.

4. Slogan “Peace, Bread and Land” -Peace to the soldiers from WWI
-Bread to the workers -Land to the peasants

5. Totalitarian One leader has total control. Controls all aspects of people’s lives. Example- Stalin, Hitler

6. Satellite Satellite- nations taken over by the USSR to expand their power. Goal- to spread Communism and create a buffer zone of friendly nations in Eastern Europe

7. Communism Communism- Command economy (government control).
-worker revolution -workers take control of the means of production. -Classless society –everybody is equal. -work to benefit the group. Problems: no incentive to work, shortage of consumer goods.

8. Stalin v. Trotsky Power struggle between Trotsky and Stalin.
-Trotsky exiled to Mexico in 1929 -1940 murdered by an agent of Stalin.

9. Czar Czar is a hereditary ruler of Russia.
Nicholas II Czar during Revolution Similar to Louis XIV of France Palaces, jewels and wealth Pogroms- killed Jews Czar and his family were killed July 1918

NEP NEP- introduced capitalism. Provided incentives to work.

11. Stalin Stalin’s goal- industrialize. Collectivization- government owned farms. Peasants created a man made famine.
