Unpacking the Prompt CUB method!

CUB!

Writing Prompt Dignity can be defined as being worthy of honor or respect. Jackie Robinson was a man with dignity. Not only was he the first black man to “officially” play baseball in the major leagues, his skill and calm attitude in the face of adversity makes him a man worthy of our respect. Write a well-supported essay in which you explain how Jackie Robinson’s actions led his teammates, and ultimately America, to respect him. Use information presented in the passage to support your points.

Writing Prompt Greyling is about a selchie which is a creature that is a seal in the water and a man on land. A man and a woman find Greyling and raise him as a boy. Greyling’s parents decide to keep him from his natural habitat, the ocean.  Write an argumentative essay in which you either defend (agree with) or refute (disagree with) their decision. Use information presented in the story and the informational passage, “Seal Protection.”

What does CUB stand for?

Writing Prompt The S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald was a ship that tragically sank in Lake Superior. This tragedy resulted in the loss of the entire crew. After reading the excerpts from both texts, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” and “The Sinking of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald” that depict the tragedy, decide which of the following claims you can defend: The crew of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald knew they were going to die prior to the sinking. OR The crew of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald did not realize the seriousness of the situation they were in. Write a well-supported argument in which you take one of the positions above on whether you believe the crew was aware of their impending death. Use information presented in the passages to support your points. Make sure to include information from all the passages in your paragraphs.

Writing Prompt Sometimes characters encounter objects that contribute to the story’s conflict. For example, in Gary Soto’s story, The Jacket, the narrator develops strong feelings towards a jacket. Just as in William Steig story, Brave Irene, Irene discusses her feelings about the wind. Write a well-supported essay in which you explain how an author’s word choice reveals a character’s feelings towards an object. Use information presented in the passages to support your points. Make sure to include information from all the passages in your essay.
