Families and Schools Partnering with PBIS
Four Core Beliefs All parents have dreams for their children and want was is best for them. All parents have the capacity to support their children’s learning. Parents and school staff should be equal partners. The responsibility for building partnerships between school and home rests primarily with school staff and especially school leaders. Colorado Department of Education Effective Multi-Tiered Family, School and Community Partnering (FSCP) Parents on Committees Schools can often be a barrier to families with special needs children even though this is not the message schools want to send “Life became so much easier after school.” Families with special needs kids already expend a lot of energy so attending a school event that they may not get a lot out of may not be something they attend Embed learning into things parents already attend Beyond the Bake Sale: The Essential Guide to School/Family Partnerships Parents on committees bring a different view than anyone at school can see – try to have at least 2 so not alone and represent more than one kind of family Some parents find schools to be a barrier or difficult to work with due to lack of communication or understanding between two parts If parents are already attending the carnival, basketball game, reading night include some communication/teaching within those nights Book: Beyond the Bake Sale- Karen Mapp
