5 LEXILE LEVELS Newsela automatically gives each student the version of an article that's just right for his or her reading ability. Easier or harder versions of each article is just a click away. (This can be a great teaching tool also to look at different levels of the same article and discuss what the writer did to the text to change the complexity.) The 5 exact Lexile choices will vary for each article, but here is an example of the typical range: 530 Lexile 840 Lexile 1040 Lexile 1240 Lexile MAX Lexile

WHERE DO THE ARTICLES COME FROM
Newsela's articles come from the McClatchy-Tribune news wire service, a consortium of 30 daily newspapers including the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Miami Herald and the Orlando Sentinel, as well as the Associated Press. The editorial team chooses articles that are timely (often breaking news), worldly (balance domestic U.S. stories with international coverage), and substantial . The team at Newsela is deliberate in choosing articles across a range of Common Core standards. Writers are journalists who have written for major news publications. They take the articles selected by the editorial team and rewrite them for different grade levels.
7
ADAPTIVE READING LEVELS
Newsela is adaptive. Over time, Newsela creates customized reading levels for each student. These reading levels are determined based on a combination of factors: Grade level (set for the class by the teacher) Reading level (set for each article by the student) Student performance data
