Water Words From A-Z Jonas October 28, 2011 4th Grade Discovery

A-acid rain Acid rain is a type of pollution. It has a PH of 1-4.

B-base Base is a seven or higher on the PH scale. Almost no bases can be consumed by humans. Water is around a 7 on the PH scale.

C-Coral Sea The Coral Sea is a body of water near Australia. Many people use it for fish farming and transportation.

D-drain When water goes down a drain, it flows into a sewage plant. Once it has been filtered and cleaned, it will be released back into the source.

E- essential for life Water is essential for life on earth. It is one of the only things that are required for all living organisms to function.

F-flowing Many bodies of water are flowing. Flowing means for a fluid to keep moving. One example of a flowing body of water is the Nile River.

G-Great Barrier Reef The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world. Its home lies in a saltwater body called the Coral Sea.

H-H2O H2O is the chemical name for water. The H stands for hydrogen and the O stands for oxygen making the molecule for water have 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.

i-irrigation Irrigation is the method of supplying land with water, usually to grow crops. The reason some fields are irrigated is they’re too dry to just let the rain handle it.

J-jellyfish Jellyfish live in the Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic Ocean is filled with saltwater.

K-kayak Kayaks aren't used in the Nile River because there are crocodiles in it. The Nile River is the longest river in the world.

L-liquid Liquid water is abundant on earth, but freshwater is hard to find. Most people gather it from near by streams and underground.

M-moves Water moves in a cycle called the water cycle. The stages in the water cycle are evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection.

N-Nile The Nile River is full of saltwater. Every summer the Nile floods. This enables the people near the Nile to grow crops.

O-ocean Ocean currents warm cold places up a little. They also create pleasant breezes in all sorts of ways.

P-pollution Pollution harms animals in the sky, on land, and in water. To prevent some of this, don’t put chemicals on your front lawn. This will cause the chemicals to wash to the sea when it rains.

Q-quadrant The Coral Sea is in the southeastern quadrant of the world. The Coral Sea is home to the largest coral reef in the world named The Great Barrier Reef.

R-river A river is a flowing stream of water containing freshwater. It forms when many little trickles of water from rain, springs, and other sources come together.

S-sea A sea is not the same thing as an ocean. It’s a section of an ocean.

T-treatment process The treatment process of making water drinkable again is long and complicated, but it’s still important.

U-under ground Most of the freshwater accessible by humans comes from underground. We make wells that go deep into the ground and get that water.

V-virus There are some viruses in our water sources. That’s why we have water treatment plants.

W-waves There are many waves near the Pacific Ocean. The Pacific Ocean is home to a swirling pool filled with garbage called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

X-xylem Xylem are shoots that carry water up a plant. If the water is polluted, the plant wont grow.

Y-Yukon The Yukon River is located near Alaska and Canada. A river is a flowing body of water, usually formed by rain and melted snow.

Z-zooplankton Zooplankton are an animal-like plankton that lives in almost every body of water in the world. A body of water is a collection of water such as a river, ocean, pond, bay, gulf, oasis, stream, ect.
