2 My background Attended Cascade High School (go class of 2001!)
Everett CC (AA) Western (BA in English and Teaching Certification) UW Bothell (Master’s in Ed ~ literacy focus) 10th year full-time teaching at JHS (student taught here as well!) Completed my Pro-Teach certification three years ago Attended the Pre-AP institute four years ago; Have attended the AP institute for Literature twice and for Language (rhetoric) this summer I LOVE DISNEY!

Quicker pace Students have strong foundation in reading/writing/communication Higher level thinking/skills/knowledge (grammar, texts, questions) Independent learners Rely heavily on Socratic method (learning through questioning) Depth and breadth

SpringBoard Student Workbook Composition Book with labeled sections – Writer’s Notebook (WNB) Independent Novel

6 Additional Materials Needed
Pencils/Pens Paper Highlighters Post-It / Sticky Notes …we want students to be interactive with their SpringBoard workbooks and all reading materials.

7 SpringBoard AP Connections: Understanding strong relationships among author’s purpose, use of literary/stylistic devices, and desired effect. Gleaning and synthesizing information from a variety of texts to respond to an AP prompt. Writing in response to a synthesis prompt like those used on the AP Language Exam. Writing to interpret, evaluate, and negotiate differing critical perspectives in literature.

How do writers use the strategies of definition to define a concept? What is the American Dream? Unit 2: How can artistic expression advance social commentary? How are the components of rhetoric applied to the creation and delivery of persuasive speeches?

9 4 SpringBoard Units Unit 3:
How do news outlets impact public opinion or public perception? How does a writer use tone to advance an opinion? Unit 4: What does it mean to pursue happiness? How can a writer use/manipulate genre conventions for effect?

10 4 SpringBoard Units Unit 5:
How do cultural movements such as the Harlem Renaissance reflect and create people’s attitudes and beliefs? How is one writer’s work both a natural product of and departure from the ideas of a specific literary movement in American literature?
