Texas A Land of Change

Waterways in Texas
3
WATER RESOURCES IN TEXAS
Rivers – 22 rivers are located in Texas Lakes – Caddo Lake is the only natural lake Reservoirs – artificial lakes that store water for drinking purposes 4. Aquifers – formations of natural gravel, rock and sand that trap and hold rainwater underground – largest aquifer in Texas is the Ogallala 5. Gulf – Texas is located along the Gulf of Mexico

Landforms

FOUR LANDFORMS IN TEXAS
Hills Mountains - Highest Point in Texas is the Guadalupe Peak Plains – areas of flat or gently rolling land without a sharp rise or fall Plateaus – areas of flat elevated land that drop sharply on one or more side -

EFFECT OF CLIMATE AND WEATHER ON ECONOMY AND LIFE
Natural disasters cause problems for humans, animals, and businesses. Tornadoes cause damage to livestock and property by high winds. Droughts cause water shortages and damage Texas farm and ranching industries. Hurricanes, floods, and blizzards injure people and damage property and industries.
12
The Texas Climate Region Characteristics Cause/Reason all regions
Rio Grande valley; north-central Texas Gulf Coast Panhandle West Texas hot summers; lots of sunshine closeness of Texas to equator rainfall increases west to east warm, moist Gulf air in East Texas hotter temperatures warm, dry winds from the west cooler summers; warmer winters; higher humidity sea breezes off the Gulf of Mexico colder in winter; has northers cold winds from the north cooler at higher elevations year-round at higher elevations air is thinner and absorbs less heat
13
PLANTS AND ANIMALS ARE AFFECTED BY LANDSCAPE AND CLIMATE
Climate, landforms, and soil determine where a plant will grow. Vegetation provides a habitat to a wide variety of animals. - habitat – environmental home
14
Population
15
FACTORS THAT HAVE LED TO POPULATION GROWTH IN TEXAS
More births and fewer deaths Increased immigration and migration Population Growth Rate
16
GROWING TEXAS POPULATION
Texans and Geography GROWING TEXAS POPULATION immigration and migration birth rate higher than death rate decreasing death rate due to better health care

Natural Resources

NATURAL RESOURCES FOUND IN TEXAS
Agriculture – climate, soil, water, trees, prairie grasses, sunlight Energy – oil, coal, natural gas, sunlight, wind Construction and Mining – trees, sand, gravel, copper, salt, sulfur
