Spring Term Year 2 ‘Stories' Physical Development
The children will continue to develop their ball skills through competitive games in order to refine and improve their passing and dodging actions whilst travelling with the ball. They will be encouraged to work co-operatively as team players. Language, Literacy and Communication We will be developing the children’s understanding of story structures including describing their characters and story settings. Other genres of writing to be covered include Persuasive writing, Recount and Poetry. Jolly grammar and weekly rainbow words will continue to be covered and joined handwriting encouraged. Reading groups will take place on a daily basis. Mathematical Development The children will use and apply their number skills in a variety of practical tasks including using money, passing time, capacity and positional/directional language. They will experience partitioning numbers to support mental strategies and understanding of place value. The children will develop their numerical reasoning skills through a range of structured activities. Knowledge and Understanding of the World The school’s grounds will be used to measure weather conditions including temperature, rainfall, wind strength and direction. The children will carry out investigations to test waterproof materials and to find out the best way to keep sandwiches fresh. They will also plot journeys using co-ordinates to direct a programmable toy along the route. Spring Term ‘Stories' Year 2 Creative Development Children will be encouraged to build on the skills they have previously learnt in a wide range of art experiences. We will use sketch books to record ideas. A range of artists will be discussed where appropriate in the curriculum. Chinese music and dance will be explored. We will continue to learn Welsh Country dances. The children will be composing actions and sounds to accompany a wide variety of stories and songs. Design and Make tasks will be topic inspired including making a vehicle using axles and wheels. Personal and Social Development, Well-Being and Cultural Diversity Children will work through a theme called ‘Going for Goals’ which will look at they way they learn, what motivates them and what they want to achieve New Year’s Resolutions will also be discussed though the theme of ‘Turning over a New Leaf’ and making a fresh start. We will find out how the Chinese New Year is celebrated and talk about Easter and why it is so important in the Christian calendar. Welsh Language Development The focus for this term will be the children discussing their likes/ dislikes, the weather, the clothes they are wearing and places they would like to visit. Each day the children practise asking and answering questions in Welsh and we are now beginning to add questions in the past tense.

Physical Development Encourage children to play with balls of different sizes. Encourage children to run, jump, skip, hop with increasing control. Personal and Social Development, Well-Being and Cultural Diversity Discuss your own goals with your children and why they are important to you. Discuss your child’s goals and why they are important to them. Mathematical Development Encourage your child to use mental maths at every opportunity. Talk to your child about any maths homework that comes home. Ask your children to explain how they have arrived at an answer and the skills they have used Support your child to give change when using money. Read different scales on thermometers, measuring jugs and rulers. Knowledge and Understanding of the World Encourage your child to discuss different types of journeys. Look at different forms of transport and discuss how it has changed through the ages. Spring Term How you can help Language, Literacy and Communication Practise weekly spellings that are sent home. Support your child to improve their use of joined handwriting. Encourage your child to read the home reading book sent from school and discuss story. Books can be changed on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Creative Development Listen to different types of music and discuss the instruments they can identify in the music. Support and extend children when creating models. Look at different artists work and techniques. Welsh Language Development Highlight the Welsh language when out and about. Share any songs with your child. If you want any other phrases ask your class teacher.
