What are “Letter Styles” Understand parts of letters Learn how to develop font style to suit specific industries, leaflets or packages

2 Letter Styles What is letter styles? Arranging letter forms / shapes on a page to produce printed matter. What does the word Font mean? A specific size and style of type within a type family What does the word Render mean? Render or Rendering is when an artist or craftsmen adds finishing touches to an object or shape. This could include colour, paint, staining etc.

5 Base Line: The line along which the bases of all capital letters (and most lowercase letters) are positioned. Ascender Line: A line marking the topmost point of the cap line. Ascender: The part of certain lowercase letters that extends above the x-height of a font. Serif: A small cross stroke accentuating the end of the main stroke of a letter in some typefaces. San-Serif Type: Text using typefaces that have no serifs, such as Helvetica, Optima, or Futura. Cap Line: A line marking the height of uppercase letters within a font. Cap Height: The height of the uppercase letters within a font. Descender: The part of certain lowercase letters that extends below the base line of the letter. Descender Line: A line marking the lowest point of the descenders within a font. X-Height: The height of those lowercase letters such as "x", which have no ascenders or descenders. X Line: A line marking the top of those lowercase letters, such as "x", having no ascenders. The upper boundary of x-height
