Biology w/ earth systems Chapter 13: Explore Part 2
Please get out your journal and a BSCS book. Turn in your Explore Part 1 lab now. In the “Warm-Up” section of your journal write today’s date and answer the following question: In our last lab activity we created a model of a continent moving. How is what we did in class similar to real life?
2
Warm Up Review We were modeling plate tectonics and demonstrating how slow of a process it is in real life. The growth rate of your fingernail in one year is about how far the Earth’s plates travel in the same amount of time.

Explore: Scaling Up to Mountainous Change Part 2
Learning Targets: I can explain describe and explain examples of “uplift” and “erosion” that cause changes in the Earth’s geological features.

Tools you will need today:
BSCS textbook Lab Worksheet Table Partner
5
Open your book to page 647 and look at the major concepts.
Different parts of earth systems change at different rates. Plate tectonics, mountain building, and erosion have shaped the surface of the Earth. Tectonic plates interact by crashing together, pulling apart, or grinding past one another. Some tectonic events are rapid. It takes many such events over long periods of time to build mountains. Many patterns of life on Earth are linked to patterns of plate tectonics.

Complete the lab sheet with your table partner
If you are facing the windows you will work with the Papua New Guinea diagram. If you are facing the hallway you will work with the Barbados diagram.
