The strongest tornadoes have rotating winds of more than 250 mph.
Most tornadoes form from thunderstorms. You need warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and cool, dry air from Canada. When these two air masses meet, they create instability in the atmosphere A tornado appears as a rotating, funnel-shaped cloud that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground with whirling winds that can reach 300 miles per hour. Before a tornado hits, the wind may die down and the air may become very still. The strongest tornadoes have rotating winds of more than 250 mph.
