Mixtures Unit 1 Topic 6

Types of mixtures A mixture contains two or more substances occupying the same space but are not chemically combined. When the substances are evenly distributed throughout the mixture it is called homogeneous. When the substances are unevenly distributed throughout the mixture it is called heterogeneous.

Homogeneous Homogeneous mixtures have an even distribution of their particles. This means that every part of the mixture has the same proportions of each particle. Solutions are homogeneous. The particles in a solution are very small and evenly mixed so you cannot see the separate parts (it does not look like a mixture).

Example Kool-aid, when mixed by the directions, completely dissolves. The sugar and flavor particles dissolve evenly throughout the water. If you make a pitcher of Kool-aid and pour your friends a glass, each glass will have the same color, taste and composition.

Example Ex 2: ____________ is a mixture whose main components are nitrogen, N2, oxygen O2 and carbon dioxide CO2. Each sample of air collected would have the same % of each gas molecule.

Heterogeneous Heterogeneous mixtures have an uneven distribution of their particles. This means that every part of the mixture has somewhat different proportions of each particle. The different components of the mixture are easily seen because they are larger and unevenly mixed.

Example Ex 1: Chocolate chip cookie dough is a heterogeneous mixture. If you make cookies all of the same size, then analyze the number of chocolate chips in each cookie, not all of the cookies would have the same number of chips.

Ex 2: Salad dressing (Italian) even after mixing, the oil and spices are unevenly mixed and you can easily see the separate components. If you let the mixture set, then the components easily begin to separate with the oil going to the top and the spices settling to the bottom.
