1 USING THE STANDARD ALGORITHM
MULTIPLYING DECIMALS

2 YOU CAN DO IT RELAX

3 FIRST LETS GET A PROBLEM
23.4 X 56 FIRST LETS GET A PROBLEM

4 PRETEND YOU DON'T HAVE A DECIMAL TO WORRY ABOUT
CLEAR YOUR MIND, DUDE PRETEND YOU DON'T HAVE A DECIMAL TO WORRY ABOUT

5 SO NOW IT'S JUST 234 X 56 Write the problem vertically

6 THE ONES PLACE Multiply the 6 by the 4 because they are both in the ones place 4 x 6 = 24 Write the 4, carry the 2

7 TOP 10 NOW MULTIPLY THE 6 BY THE 3, BECAUSE IT'S IN THE TENS PLACE. ADD WHAT YOU CARRY.

8 HUNDREDS PLACE Now multiply the 6 by 2, because it's in the hundreds place Add what you carried

9 PUT IT UNDER THE 4 PLACE THE ZERO!!!

10 THE BOTTOM LINE Multiply the 5 by the 4
because 5 is the other number on the bottom line. And 4 is in the ones place 5 x 4 =20 Write the zero, carry the 2

11 TENS PLACE REVISITED Now multiply the 5 by the 3 Add what you carried

12 HUNDREDS PLACE Multiply the 5 by 2
Because the 2 is in the hundreds place

13 IT ALL ADDS UP So 234 x 56 = 13,104

14 THIS IS ABOUT MULTIPLYING DECIMALS
BUT WAIT!!!!

15 LET'S LOOK AT THE PROBLEM WITH THE ANSWER AND THE DECIMALS
CHILL

16 EASY BREEZY Here's the rule
Since there is one number to the right of the decimal in the problem... There must be one number to the right of the decimal in the answer So, 23.4 x 56 = 1,310.4

17 “ Let's play with this a little bit.”
–MOVING THE DECIMALS AROUND

18 LET'S TRY 2.34 X 56 This time there are two digits to the right of a decimal, so... There are two digits to the right of the decimal in the answer

19 OKAY, LET'S TRY .234 X 56 Now there are three digits to the right of a decimal, so... There are three digits to the right of a decimal in the answer

20 WHAT ABOUT TWO DECIMALS, SMARTY PANTS?
BUT HOLD ON!! WHAT ABOUT TWO DECIMALS, SMARTY PANTS?

21 OKAY, LET'S TRY 23.4 X 5.6 Since there are two digits to the right of a decimal (on top & bottom)... There are two digits to the right of a decimal in your. Answer

22 AFTER ALL, YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO GET BY ON YOUR LOOKS
I HOPE THIS HELPS AFTER ALL, YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO GET BY ON YOUR LOOKS
