1 A Grabbing Subject… MAGNETS!

2 Vocabulary Electromagnet Repel Circuit Magnetic Pole Metal
What do we think the word means? Concentrate on the PARTS of ELECTRO-MAGNET Same for the other words We’ll look these words up when we get to them

3 What are magnets? What do they look like? What are they made of?
Shape? Color? Size? What are they made of? Let students share their answers freely, unless way off. Point out that all magnets are made of METAL- either COBALT, IRON or NICKLE

4 Where are magnets? Where do they come from? Where do we use them?
Magnets come from rocks in the earth We use them in everyday life- fridges, trains, MRI, COMPASSES

5 How do magnets work? Ideas? Observe…
Explain that magnets have POLES. (“Have you heard that somewhere before?” Explain that the earth is a large magnet) Different poles ATTRACT one another. Like poles REPEL one another.

6 Magnets and Electricity
What do we know about electricity? (What does it do, what does it look like, where is it?) 5 things about electricity (Should include…) -it’s ENERGY -It can make HEAT and MOTION -It works in a CIRCUIT (circle) -In 3rd Grd, students should have learned that batteries store energy,

7 Electromagnetism An electric current passed around metal will make it a magnet A magnet that gets passed through a coil of wires will also make electricity!

8 Why are electromagnets useful?
The Big Question Why are electromagnets useful?

9 Review What does CIRCUIT mean? What are magnets made of?
What is an electromagnet? How many POLES does a magnet have? Where does electricity come from?
