1
Current can produce magnetism
Lesson 3.2 Current can produce magnetism
2
Electric current produces a magnetic field
Electromagnetism – magnetism that results from an electric current Movement of charged particles produces a magnetic field Therefore moving electrons can create a magnetic field around a wire
3
Magnetism is concentrated inside the loop of wire
Magnetic force gets stronger by adding more coils of wire North pole forms at one end, south pole at the other
4
Electromagnets Made by placing an iron core inside a coil of wire Current through the wire creates magnetism Adding coils or more current strengthens the magnetism Most powerful magnet
5
Uses of electromagnets
Magnets on cranes Computer hard drive Sound/movie film motors Can be turned on and off
6
Electromagnets & Motors
Motors convert current into motion by using magnetism Electromagnet interacts with a magnet causing opposite poles to attract and unlike poles to repel Movement or spinning is created
7
Uses of Motors Motors can move objects in any direction Can be large enough to power a train or car Small enough to run a watch
