Length of railway network is km. 5 billion passengers and 350 million tones of freight are transported annually.

There are 17 zones and each zone consists of certain number of divisions with a total of 67 divisions.

Three main categories of tracks:
Broad gauge – 1676mm Meter gauge – 1000mm Narrow gauge – 762mm - 610mm

Two basic types of engines are:

Production units CLW: The Chittaranjan Locomotive Works in Chittaranjan makes electric locomotives. DLW: The Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi makes diesel locomotives. ICF: The Integral Coach Factory in Perambur makes integral coaches. These have a monocoque construction, and the floor is an integral unit with the undercarriage. RCF: The Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala also makes coaches for the Indian Railways. RWF: The Rail Wheel Factory at Yelahanka manufactures wheels and axles.

Notable fact and achievement
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a world heritage site by UNESCO. Ghum near Darjeeling at an altitude of 7000 ft is one of the highest hill station in the Asia. Kalka-Shimla railway has the steepest rise in altitude and made entry into Guinness Book of World Record.

Electric locomotive in India first manufactured in 1970. Other information: Overhead line voltage is generally 25000V AC. In some place 1500V, DC current or 750V, DC current.

Other Information Fastest passenger train, Delhi Bhopal Shatabdi Express runs at 150km/hr. Highest speed of goods train in India is 100km/hr. Japanese magnetic levitation train JR.Maglev has a peak speed of 581km/hr. 70% of Indian Railway revenues come from freight sector.
