1 FINISHES Finishing is done to improve a materials appearance, properties and quality. It covers many different processes, some mechanical and some chemical.

2 Most woods need protection, particularly if they‘re going to be used outdoors.
Paint – often used to colour and protect wood Most hardwoods have an attractive grain and often don’t have paint as a surface finish. Oil – used to maintain a natural appearance, some oil-based finishes offer water protection. Wood stain – used to improve the appearance of woods grain. It is available in natural colours and in bright colours but it does not make wood water proof. Polyurethane varnish – seals and protects the surface of wood, it gives a smooth finish, it comes in a wide range of colours.

3 Dip into plastic powder
METAL Dip coating A metal component is heated in an oven. After heating, it is removed and dipped into a bath of powder, which has been fluidised using high volume, low pressure air. The powder melts onto the hot metal, which is then removed from the powder. The heat in the metal allows the powder to flow to form a smooth coating. The coating hardens as it cools, giving a hard-wearing coated surface Heat up to 400°c Place metal into oven Dip into plastic powder

4 MATERIALS Smart finishes Mechanical finishing
Brushing cotton or nylon fabrics makes them fluffy and warm, with a soft handle. The fabrics pass through rollers with wire brushes that lift the fibres Heat-setting is used for thermoplastic fabrics (polyester and nylon). The fabrics are set in permanent shapes or pleats. Smart finishes Anti-bacterial finishes are applied to the fabric surface to slow down the growth of bacteria. They control odours in sports shoes and reduce infection in medical products. Coating involves applying a layer of polymer to the surface of the fabric. Teflon coating makes fabrics stain-resistant, water-repellent and breathable.

5 QUESTIONS Paint, oil, varnish, stain
Give three types of protective coatings you could apply to a wooden outdoor seat? Paint, oil, varnish, stain
