8
What is an Emergency?
9
There are 2 questions you can ask yourself to help determine if the situation is an emergency.
10
Do I need help fast from the police, fire department or ambulance?
11
Is there a danger to anyone’s health, safety or property?
If you answer yes to either or both of these questions then you need to call 911 right away!
12
What happens if you call 911?
13
“911, do you require police, fire or ambulance?”
If you have an emergency and need to call 911, your call will be answered by a 911 Call Taker who will ask: “Do you require police, fire or ambulance?” It is important to stay calm and tell the Call Taker what is happening.
14
“What is your phone number?”
The Call Taker is then going to ask you for your phone number. Clearly state the phone number for where you are calling from, if you are not sure it is OK, just look at the phone you are using, sometimes the number is listed there. If you still don’t know it is OK, the call taker can still help.
15
“What community are you in?”
The next question the Call Taker will ask is what community or town you are in. Clearly state the name of the town you are in. This is how the call taker can identify the right emergency responders to help you. If you are not sure what town you are in, then you can describe your surroundings to help the Call Taker determine your location. If you are travelling then you can say where you left and where you were going.
16
“Hold while I transfer you to the police/fire department/ambulance?”
Once the Call Taker knows where you are and what help you need they are going to transfer you to the right people that can help you for your emergency. It is important to stay on the line! Don’t worry, the Call Taker will stay on the line with you until you are speaking with the police, fire department or ambulance providers. The emergency responders will ask you for more information regarding your emergency and can help you while you wait for their response. It is important to stay calm and follow directions.
17
How can you help?
