Motivating Research Findings
A recent literature review found that fractionized exercise spaced evenly throughout the day was superior to a single continuous exercise session in prehypertensives (Park, Rink & Wallace, 2006) to normotensive individuals. Cardiovascular health risks can be reduced with as little as three 10-minute walks a day. Gascon, G. M., PhD. (n.d.). HERO Industry Research Review: Effective Physical Activity Strategies for Improving Worker Health [Review of Shrestha N, Kukkonen - Harjula KT, Verbeek JH, Ijaz S, Hermans V, Bhaumik S. Workplace interventions for reducing sitting at work. Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews ; 3: CD Angadi SS, Weltman A, Watson - Winfield D, Weltman J, Frick K, Patrie J & Gaesser GA. Effect of fractionized vs continuous, single - session exercise on blood pressure in adults. Journal of Human H ypertension. 2010; 24(4 ): ]. Retrieved August 28, 2016, from

More Research Findings
Seniors who get little to no exercise have a 50 percent greater risk of dementia compared with those who regularly take part in moderate or heavy amounts of physical activity. With age, the brain tends to shrink. But people who regularly exercised tended to have larger brain volumes. Increased blood flow may lead to increased density of the connections between the neurons and create alternative pathways for signals" that might otherwise be impeded due to age-related brain shrinkage. Even a Little Exercise May Help Stave Off Dementia. (2016, August 26). Retrieved August 29, 2016, from

What we hope to achieve…
The goal for WashU Moves is to encourage employees to integrate activity into their daily lives – both at home and at work. Following the Spring 2016 Challenge, 86% of participants reported that they had increased daily activity level; 75% felt ‘very confident’ that they would sustain that level of activity. Remember: P.I.E. Positive. Inclusive. Empowering. Following the 2015 Challenge, 74% of participants reported that they had increased daily activity level; 82% felt confident that they would sustain that level of activity. We were pleased to see that about 10% of participants classified themselves as having ‘avoided exercise’ prior to the start of the challenge. We would like to see this population grow. We want every motivated individual to feel welcome in this challenge, even if their daily step goal is less than 10,000. Our goal is simply to help everyone move more. Andrea Krussel is the Graduate Student Coordinator in the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences at the school of medicine. She competed on ‘Vote for Pedro’ team in the fall of 2015.

Journey Across the World!
Members of the F.R.I.E.N.D.S Team use their WashU Moves World Map to set a personal goal and cheer each other on! Team Captain Dr. Nelly Joseph-Mathurin says ” Each teammate is from a particular department but also from different cities all around the world. I let them chose their own trip and goal. But we try to keep motivating us seeing the progression of everyone.”

Be a Walk Star! Nominate someone on your team who is working hard to reach their step goals or who is a motivating force for others. Send name and brief story to WalkStar: Rachel Major Rachel Major recently joined the university as a department secretary in the Olin Business School and registered for the WashU Moves Challenge in her very first week! She is a member of The Walkie Talkies team and has been an inspiration to her teammates during this challenge. In addition to starting a new job, Rachel is also planning a wedding in four months and has found her participation in this challenge as a great way to “balance out all of the chaos”. One of her teammates, Kourtney Dickerson, said “Rachel jogged to her Cardio Barre class (which was about 2 miles away) completed her barre class and then walked/jogged back home. That, to me, is just proof of real commitment to this challenge – not to mention a LOT OF STEPS!” Congrats on your engagement, Rachel – and keep moving!
