1 THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY
2-2

2 Distributive Property
This property combines multiplication with addition and subtraction. To multiply a sum or difference, multiply each number within the parentheses by the number outside the parentheses. 3(2 + 6)

3 3(2 + 6) Distribute the 3 to both numbers inside of the parentheses by multiplying. 3(2) + 3(6) (6) 24

4 Examples: 20( ) (15 – 5)

5 Reversing the Distributive Property
You can also use the reverse of the Distributive Property, by taking out a common factor. Example: 5(4) + 5(3) 5(4 + 3) 5(7) 35

6 Examples: 7(21) + 7(9) (16)2 – (11)2

7 Creating Distributive Property Problems
Take the number on the inside of the parenthesis and break it down into 2 different numbers (it is easiest to break it into two numbers that add together to make that original #) Then solve using the Distributive Property rules

8 Example… 7(23) 7 (20 + 3) 7(20) + 7(3) 161

9 Examples… 1.) 4(98) 2.) (102)3
