2 Vocabulary Expression – number sentence that does NOT have an equal sign Ex. 4x – 6x + 5 Coefficient - Number used to multiply a variable ex. 4x – 6x Term – Each part of an expression, separated by a + or - sign Ex. 4x – 6x + 5 Like Term – Terms that have the same variable Ex. 4x – 6x Constant – A specific value that does not change Ex. 4x – 6x + 5

10 The Distributive Property
The distributive property lets you multiply a sum by multiplying each addend separately and then add the products. 8( 5x – 3)

To multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend by the number outside the parenthesis 3(20+15) = 3x x 15 a(b+c) = a x b + a x c
