Types of Emotions Emotions: are your feelings created in response to thoughts, remarks, or events. Three categories of feelings. Pleasant Unpleasant Neutral

Spectrum of Emotions Joy
Happiness Pleasure Most emotions come in a spectrum or continuum. Example: Pleasure/Happiness/Joy Pleasure = intense, but short lasting Happiness = contentment, satisfaction Joy = deep satisfaction, permanent, isn’t based on external circumstances Deepest Superficial

Some Vocabulary Review
Anger: a strong feeling of annoyance or displeasure. A common emotion felt especially during the teen years. Frustration: A feeling of being upset or annoyed because of inability to change or achieve something. Aggression: An unprovoked hostile or violent act, verbal or physical, towards another person Put these 3 on a spectrum/continuum in your notes.

Why am I so quick to lose my Temper?
Mainly due to changes in your brain. Specifically the hormones testosterone, estrogen, and serotonin Huge impact on Amygdala Serotonin typically stabilizes mood. Too little can cause depression or aggression.

Expressing Unpleasant Feelings
It’s normal to feel these emotions from time to time. Emotions themselves are neither good or bad. How I express these emotions is important. Examples of expressing emotions…how well do they do?

Emotional “BAND AID” Coping Mechanisms
Denial – refusing an emotion or problem. Identification – assuming the qualities of someone that you admire. Compensation – making up for weakness in one area by excelling in another. Rationalization – making excuses for actions or feelings Displacement – transferring emotions from the original source to another.

More “BAND AID” Coping Projection – putting your own faults onto another person. Regression – reverting to immature behavior to express emotions. Reaction Formation – behaving in a manner opposite to the way you are feeling.

When I Feel….I Want to.. You are going to be making a small booklet. On one page it will have the phrase “when I feel” you will pick/draw a picture that describes that feeling. On the other page you will have the phrase “I want to”. Again, you will pick or draw a picture that best represents your typical response to the emotion you picked. On the back page you will have the phrase “when I feel…I could”. You will give 3 healthy alternatives of ways you could react to unwanted emotions.

Types of Stress Eustress: Positive stress; helps you reach your goals; motivates you to do your best. Distress: Negative stress; stress that has unhealthy effects on your body and mind. Stressor: Anything that causes stress. Ranging from everyday annoyances to serious problems.
