Jay-Z sued for allegedly plagiarizing parts of his own memoir ‘Decoded’
Nothing says success like getting slapped with a lawsuit. Jay-Z is the latest music mogul to face a copyright infringement lawsuit — though, in the “Watch the Throne” rapper’s case, the legal troubles stem from his writing, not his rhymes. In a case filed June 13 in Los Angeles, Patrick White accused Hova of lifting portions of his writing and using them as his own in the rapper's best-selling book “Decoded.” “In 2009, my personal computer was compromised, resulting in my personal work to be used in Jay-Z’s book 'Decoded' which was released in 2010,” White claims in the handwritten lawsuit. “The book contains various expressions/colors/phrases which correlates to my work,” he continues. “After contacting or attempting to contact the co-aurthor, I got no reply.” According to Allhiphop.com, White is also including author Dream Hampton and Random House publishing in the lawsuit seeking unspecified damages. Jay-Z’s 2010 bestseller is a collection of lyrics and the story behind their meanings, making it highly unlikely that the claims hold any merit. White is seeking damages for copyright infringement and invasion of property.

How to Avoid Plagiarism?
Paraphrase the information and ideas of the articles you read. Use Quotation Marks when using author’s exact words. Cite/give credit to the writers of the articles you’ve used. Attach to your essay a bibliographic list of all the articles you’ve used for this research project.
13
Know How to Paraphrase A paraphrase is a restatement in your own words of someone else's ideas. Changing a few words of the original sentences does NOT make your writing a legitimate paraphrase. You must change both the words and the sentence structure of the original, without changing the content. Also, you should keep in mind that paraphrased passages still require citation because the ideas came from another source, even though you are putting them in your own words.
14
How to Cite? What should be included in your citation
The name/s of the author/s The title of their article The name of the publication in which it was published OR name of the website Date of publication Where and when you found that article

An original Paragraph A purpose statement is a declarative sentence, which summarizes the specific topic and goals of a document. It is typically included in the introduction to give the reader an accurate, concrete understanding what the document will cover and what he/she can gain from reading it. To be effective, a statement of purpose should be: Specific and precise - not general, broad or obscure Concise - one or two sentences Clear - not vague, ambiguous or confusing Goal-oriented - stated in terms of desired outcomes (Washington.edu, n.d., para.1)
16
Paraphrased text According to Washington.edu (n.d.), an effective purpose statement sums up the study topic and its objectives. The purpose statement is also clear and exact and states what the study will include and what the reward will be for the reader.

Original Passage MSF (Doctors without Borders)
Medical aid where it is needed most. Independent. Neutral. Impartial Opening a Project MSF works in roughly 70 countries around the world, each with its own unique circumstances, but MSF missions generally originate according to a common set of practices designed to make sure our resources and expertise are used in the best way possible. When a crisis breaks, we act fast to gauge the needs, mobilizing MSF staff already in the area or sending in an emergency team. In reality, these two groups often work closely together and we can begin treating people even as we develop the full plan. In Haiti, for example, our staff already working in the country treated the first victim of 2010’s earthquake within five minutes, even before the emergency team deployed. This is because we have emergency supplies—from surgical kits and inflatable hospital and cholera kits—ready at all times, as well as cash reserves for disaster response. This means we do not need to wait for institutional donors to release money or a crisis to catch the public consciousness: we can act where and when the need is greatest.
