7 Effective Hooks Grab the reader with a pow! Know your audience

8 A Few Types of Hooks….there are many!
Anecdote An Eye-Opening Fact Reliable Source (Quot Verbal Picture *NEVER ASK A QUESTION! Grrr….!

9 Anecdote and Humor Our neighbors have all moved away —again, and it's all Mom's fault—again. Their subtle hints and then outright criticism went right over her head. First it was Christmas wreaths in July, and then it was plastic eggs in December. Leaving holiday decorations up during the wrong season can cause many problems. Decorations can become worn by the weather making your house look like an eye-sore. They can alienate your neighbors and cause you to assume fines from your home owners association.

10 Eye-Opening Fact Imagine a line of dead and mangled bodies stretching for twenty-five miles—25,000 corpses. That is the number of victims of drunk driving every year. It's hard to believe that the number is increasing in spite of the ads and community awareness efforts. The time has come to take more specific measures to get drunk drivers off the road. Police should set up check points to look for drunk drivers. Restaurants and bars should be held accountable for serving people too much alcohol. Driving under the influence should carry a stricter consequence.

11 Reliable Source Muhammad Ali was famous for saying, “Float like a butterfly. Sting like a bee.” He was attempting to instill fear in his opponents. Maybe he should have compared his boxing moves to a brown recluse spider instead. Now found as far north as Wisconsin, this spider sports a nasty bite that unless treated correctly can cause death. It's easy to avoid being bitten by dangerous insects. People who are at risk should search the areas they are exploring, avoid high seasonal peek times for poisonous insects and wear protective clothing.

12 Verbal Picture The young driver turns up the stereo louder and smiles as he dreams of the fun he had at the party—plenty of good music and beer. Suddenly a tree appears from out of nowhere. He grabs at the wheel to turn the car. Headlights swerve in the darkness. But it's too late. A patrol car screams to find the twisted body of another kid who drank and drove. Teenagers need to understand the effects of alcohol on their adolescent bodies. Abuse of alcohol can lead to early death and lead to drunk driving. Alcohol can cause teenage brains to be underdeveloped.

Prompt Write a Hook and a thesis statement. Leave off the claims for now Write an essay explaining the benefits of decreasing our use of cars.

15 As the global concern for the environment increases with time, the desire to use cars decreases. People are aware that cars release fumes which, when combined, can be detrimental for the environment, and they want to do something about it. It seems like America, and the rest of the world, is becoming more aware about what cars can do to the environment and that car usage needs to decrease, and they are taking steps to do so. By limiting car usage, the average citizen can decrease pollution and harmful greenhouse gases that are causing damage to the environment, improve living conditions in large cities and reduce smog, and feel better in general, with more exercise and less stress.
