3 A job An occupation A career
refers to the specific position in which a person is employed. (e.g. Chief of Surgery, framing carpenter at We­ Build It construction company, lab assistant at Drug Co Pharmaceuticals) An occupation is a wide category of jobs that have similar characteristics, such as types of skills or work responsibilities. A person can work at his or her occupation for different employers. (e.g. doctor, carpenter, biotechnologist) A career is the body of work—all jobs and occupations—and life experiences that a person experiences during his or her lifetime.

6 Salary and hourly wages
is generally a fixed amount calculated on an annual basis, then divided by a number of months for the amount to be determined. For example 36, per year divided by 12 months = 3, per month An employee works for certain fixed hours daily but if the work is not finished in time the employee has to use his extra time without any additional pay. An employee is entitled to leaves, perks, and benefits, Salaried persons are generally said to be doing “white collar office jobs” which implies that an individual is educated, and skilled.

is the term for payment of labor or services usually on an hourly basis for doing that work. If a person does not come in to work he will not be paid for that day. A person is paid for his presence, not for his absence. The waged person are said to be doing “blue collar labour job” which implies that an individual is engaged in the unskilled or semi-skilled job and is drawing wages on a daily basis. For example Monday April 3 worked 8 hours x per hour =

Guaranteed a certain dollar amount for every hour you work. Positions usually have a set number of hours you’ll work. If you’re asked to work more than 40 hours, you get paid overtime, which is time-and-a-half for each hour after the first 40 hours. For example, if your hourly wage is $12, you would be paid $18 for every hour past 40 hours in a week. Some employers double your hourly rate if you’re asked to work holidays. The drawbacks? If your place of business closes early or decides to cut back on hours, that means a smaller paycheck. Benefits of salary pay Guaranteed a certain dollar amount per paycheck. Some companies offer salaried employees additional perks, such as a more flexible schedule. For example, if you finish your work early, you might be able to take the afternoon off. Often salaried positions come with a higher status and/or a jump on the pay scale. The downside? if a salaried position demands more than 40 hours per week and working on holidays, you won’t get paid extra for your time.

Salary is the amount of pay based on the number of hours spent on the amount of work done. False Salary is a fixed amount paid monthly. True Wages will guarantee a set amount on a paycheck. Salary is given to those who are in a job that requires unskilled or semi-skilled workers. People on an hourly wage are paid for any extra hours they work. Mrs. Peters had to work on Spring Break therefore she will get paid extra hours on her paycheck.

Don’t assume that salary pay is necessarily better. Every job and every employee’s personal situation is different, so crunch the numbers and weigh the benefits for yourself.

11 Which is better? You are making $50,000 per year and working 60 hours per week, how much is that per hour? ( 52 weeks in 1 year) 50, / 52 weeks / 60 hours = $16.02 per hour. Or You are making $40,000 per year and working 40 hours per week, 40, / 52 weeks / 40 hours = $19.23 per hour.
