Rhode Islanders ask Charles ll to grant a new charters continuing these basic rights. In 1663 the king issued a paper caleeed the most liberal charter granted by an English monarch in the colonial age. Besides garranted religious freedom, it allowed the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations a self governement. The male property owners were to vote for the colonies law makers. In addition to a government, Rhode Island a general assembly consisting of repersentative from various towns and citioes.
