6 Accomplishing Peace by the Gospel
Justification comes by Peace with God Peace comes by the death of God’s enemy Our death occurs at the Cross Application to the cross occurs at baptism 1 Corinthians 6:11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.

7 Understanding Baptism
It is a commandment of Christ Acts 2:38, Mark 16:16 Ac 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Mr 16:16 "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.

8 Understanding Baptism
It is a commandment of Christ It is foreshadowed in the Old Testament 1 Corinthians 10:1-3, 1 Peter 3:21 1Co 10:1 ¶ For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 1Pe 3:20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. 21 ¶ Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you--not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience--through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

9 Understanding Baptism
It is a commandment of Christ It is foreshadowed in the Old Testament It is being led by the Spirit John 3:5, Titus 3:5 Joh 3:5 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Tit 3:5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

10 Understanding Baptism
It is a commandment of Christ It is foreshadowed in the Old Testament It is being led by the Spirit There is only one baptism today Ephesians 4:5, 1 John 5:8 1 John 5:8 And there are three that bear witness (to our salvation, per vs. 13) on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one. Ephesians 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism

11 Baptism: Drawing to the Cross
Romans 6 teaches: Baptism is the application of the cross Baptism is the means of sanctification Baptism is the means of justification Job 13:24 Why do You hide Your face, And regard me as Your enemy? Isa 63:10 But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; So He turned Himself against them as an enemy, And He fought against them.

12 Conclusions We Draw: Baptism before Christ’s death was not this baptism Acts 19:2-5 Prior to Acts 2 NO ONE had that baptism Ac 19:3 And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into John's baptism." 4 Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus." 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

13 Conclusions We Draw: Baptism before Christ’s death was not this baptism Baptism without repentance is unsuccessful Repentance = death to sin Burying the dead or the living? Baptism is ONLY for dead sinners 1 Corinthians 15:29 1Co 15:9 Otherwise, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then are they baptized for them?

14 Conclusions We Draw: Baptism before Christ’s death was not this baptism Baptism without repentance is unsuccessful Baptism is the transition point of: Changing from lost to saved – 1 Peter 3:21 Changing from sinner to saint – 1 Cor. 6:11 Leaving the kingdom of darkness for light – Col. 1:13 Becoming a Christian – Matt. 28:19 w/ Acts 11:26 Being added to the church – Acts 2:38-47 Col 1:13 For He delivered us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,

15 God’s Work in Baptism Titus 3:5
Baptism’s effect is by faith alone - Hearing is OUR work – Mark 4:9 - Belief is OUR work – John 6:29 - Confession is OUR work – Romans 10:9 - Repentance is OUR work – Acts 26:20 GOD does the work in baptism Titus 3:5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit Mr 4:9 And He was saying, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear.“ Joh 6:29 Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent." Acts 26:20 - that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.
