1 Romanticism – response to Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution that involved emotional responses to problems rather than reason. This was usually displayed in art, music, and literature. K. How did ideas of Romanticism differ than those of the Enlightenment? L. How did advances in science influence life during the Industrial Revolution?

2 Romantics were interested in Middle Age history.
K. How did ideas of Romanticism differ than those of the Enlightenment? Romantics valued individualism and usually rebelled against the norms of society. Ex: Male romantics grew long hair and long beards. Romantics were interested in Middle Age history. Neo-gothic architecture: constructing new buildings to look the same as those during the Middle Ages.

3 K. How did ideas of Romanticism differ than those of the Enlightenment?
Art Art was a reflection an artist’s inner feelings. It should mirror the artist’s vision of the world. Truth, not warmth and emotion were topics for works of art. Works of art were usually exotic in nature and used bold colors. “a painting is to be a feast for the eye”

4 K. How did ideas of Romanticism differ than those of the Enlightenment?
Music Ludwig van Beethoven Most of works fell under the category of the old classical music of the 1700’s. However, his Third Symphony included powerful melodies and dramatic intensities. “I must write – for what weighs on my heart I must express.”

5 K. How did ideas of Romanticism differ than those of the Enlightenment?
Literature Usually depicted medieval characters, such as famous kings and knights, and create stories expressing their strong nationalism. Sir Walter Scott Like art, literature also included depictions of the exotic and unfamiliar. Sometimes writing about experiences from dreams/nightmares. Mary Shelly, Frankenstien Edgar Allen Poe (also tried to create this atmosphere in their own lives)

6 K. How did ideas of Romanticism differ than those of the Enlightenment?
Literature continued Poetry usually involved connections to nature. Nature was the true mirror to analyze one’s self. Romantics feared that industrialization would cause people to become isolated, and lose touch of their inner selves and their connection to the natural world.

7 L. How did advances in science influence life during the Industrial Revolution?
The Industrial Revolution led to a heightened interest in scientific research. By the 1830’s, new discoveries were benefitting the lives of all. Led to secularization – indifference to or rejection in religious affairs. Louis Pasteur – Germ Theory Charles Darwin - Evolution

8 L. How did advances in science influence life during the Industrial Revolution?
Charles Darwin – wrote On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859) More individuals of each species are born than can possibly survive. Creates a “struggle for existence” that forces organisms to adapt to their environments Some are more able to adapt to their environment. These organisms are the strongest of their species. Natural Selection Survival of the fittest The surviving organisms then pass on their dominant traits to future generations, thus creating a new species. According to Darwin, humans had animal origins.
