Faculty Purview: The Curriculum, including establishing prerequisites. Degree and certificate requirements. Grading policies. Educational program development. Standards or policies regarding student preparation and success. College governance structures, as related to faculty roles. Note that not just the first item, but several of these are likely to be the concern of curriculum committees.

Faculty Purview: The Faculty roles and involvement in accreditation processes. Policies for faculty professional development activities. Processes for program review. Processes for institutional planning and budget development. Other academic and professional matters as mutually agreed upon. (Title 5 Section 53000) Note that not just the first item, but several of these are likely to be the concern of curriculum committees.

Collegial Consultation
Consult Collegially means that the district governing board shall develop policies on academic and professional matters through either or both of the following: 1. Rely primarily upon the advice and judgment of the academic senate, OR 2. The governing board, or its designees, and the academic senate shall reach mutual agreement by written resolution, regulation, or policy of the governing board effectuating such recommendations. Discuss the advantages of each method of consultation.

Education Code: Faculty Primacy over Curriculum
“The governing board of each district shall establish procedures to ensure faculty, staff, and students the opportunity to express their opinions at the campus level, and to ensure that these opinions are given every reasonable consideration, and the right of academic senates to assume primary responsibility for making recommendations in the areas of curriculum and academic standards.” Education Code Section (b)(7) Discuss Interaction of this items with Title 5 Language.

Delegating the 10 +1 How do your senate and curriculum committee work together on items of faculty purview? How is the senate informed of curriculum committee actions? How do the senate and curriculum committee resolve differences of opinion?

Communicating with the Board
How are recommendations developed by the curriculum committee sent to the Board? How does the faculty interact with the Board at meetings? Who presents curricular recommendations to the Board? How are questions from Board members concerning curricular matters handled?
