This is a breakdown of the number coverage which should be taught to ensure children meet the month age band.

knowledge: Are able to compare two sets of objects and count the amount up to 10. They begin to comment on the sets and can identify which one might have more. Begin to recognise numerals in the environment and can recognise numerals 105 and their meaning. Can say the name and find the corresponding numeral. Can understand that numerals tell us how many there is. They begin to recognise and understand numerals 1-5 and 1-10 and can count objects to correspond with the given numeral. Number Uses some number names and number language spontaneously. Uses some number names accurately in play. Recites numbers in order to 10. Knows that numbers identify how many objects are in a set. Beginning to represent numbers using fingers, marks on paper or pictures. Sometimes matches numeral and quantity correctly. Shows curiosity about numbers by offering comments or asking questions. Compares two groups of objects, saying when they have the same number. Shows an interest in number problems. Separates a group of three or four objects in different ways, beginning to recognise that the total is still the same. Shows an interest in numerals in the environment. Shows an interest in representing numbers. Realises not only objects, but anything can be counted, including steps, claps or jumps. Counting: Representation: Method: Are able to count 1-5 and 1-10 confidently and recognise the pattern. They are able to recite the names in order and recognise when one is out of place. They begin to count objects, numerals, actions and movements. Children are beginning to count using their fingers and are able to find the correct amount of fingers, objects for the correct numeral. Explore the numerals and attempt to write a given numeral. Can mark make and give a meaning n the context of number.
