4 Higher Education Education at university level – after Sixth Form or College (anyone over 18 – mature students welcome) Undergraduate degree – Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) Postgraduate degrees – MA, MSc and PhD Over 37,000 courses to choose from –across the UK Over 180 universities in the country

5 Student Finance Universities can now charge full-time students up to £9,250 per year for tuition (course) fees Students do not have to pay any tuition fees up front or while they are studying The Tuition Fee Loan does not depend on household income The loan is repayable, but only when the student’s income is over £21,000 a year. It is wiped after 30 years. Some bursaries and scholarships are also available

Develops confidence and self belief Gives pupils an insight into university life Helps pupils make informed choices A programme for pupils across the North Encourages pupils to achieve academically at school A long term programme for pupils in years 6-11 Inspires pupils to think about their future

9 A few facts about Shine Shine began in 2012 and is now in its fifth year When it began, 9 secondary schools were part of Shine. Now there are 22! Around 100 pupils from each secondary school takes part 2,482 pupils took part in Shine last year Last year we ran 94 Shine events in school and at the University 32 primary schools visited us last year with 646 year 6s attending in total

Pupils are chosen by their school, because their teachers think they: Have the potential to go to university Are doing well in school Will get lots out of being part of the programme

In Years 7, 8 & 9… In-school visit at the start of every year Shine competition throughout the year A visit day to the University Campus tours and hands on activities Work in groups with a student ambassador and pupils from other schools

Year 8 – Shine Quiz Challenge Year 9 – Shine Film Challenge Aims to keep pupils engaged in Shine throughout the year Encourages pupils to try new things Get pupils thinking about life beyond school Provides opportunities to gain new skills “Throughout completing this passport I have tried new activities and been a little more independent. I have tried an activity which I really enjoyed and I would not have discovered it without Shine!” (Shine Year 8 pupil)

16 Year 10 - Residential A Shine 3-day residential in March
85 year 10 pupils at each residential Realistic insight into student life Try out academic subjects and experience student life Understand student finance Increase confidence by meeting new people Group presentation An evening in the City of York Please note: There will be a residential information evening a month before

3 conferences – with around 85 pupils at each Business dress 3 workshops – student finance, A-level choices and applying to university Revision and study skills session Student panel and networking

Shine aims to: Raise aspirations Demystify higher education Develop pupils’ confidence and independence Increase self esteem Motivate pupils towards school work Increase knowledge about all aspects of university life
