1 Deteriorating Patient

2 AIM To enable health care professionals :
To recognise the deteriorating patient To initiate appropriate interventions To initiate timely interventions

3 Objectives For participants to
Understand the importance & relevance of observations and the underlying physiology Be able to recognise & interpret abnormal observations To be able to communicate effectively to the right people at the right time To feel confident in recognising & managing a deteriorating patient To facilitate teamwork within the multidisciplinary team To enable nurses, doctors & physiotherapists to develop management plans together The deteriorating patient study day is aimed at improving the immediate recognition and treatment of the hospital patient. The use of scenarios re-enforce the importance of rapid assessment and treatment with early referrals to both the home team and the Intensive Care Outreach service. Today highlights patients who are at risk of deteriorating Our aim is to teach staff how to anticipate, recognise and prevent critical illness at an early stage. This may prevent an admission to intensive care or prevent a cardiac arrest and imporve the quality of care for those who may still require an ICU admission. Improve the quality of observations taken The EWS protocol ensures senior team involvement in patient care Promotes and early definitive action plan in treatment

5 Problems encountered The aim was for the course to be interdisciplinary – Nurses attend. Only one doctor so far. I set up a team of dedicated speakers/trainers but some are not always available Particularly difficult to find trainers for the scenarios among this group. Attendees do not complete pre reading so are not as actively involved

6 Positives Good feedback from attendees High attendance numbers
Instigates thought and discussion Those who start off anxious about taking part in scenarios often feel ok afterwards

7 Future plan Change format to online learning followed by attendance at 3 hour session including scenarios To encourage more active participation by attendees by necessary pre learning requirements Need less trainers per course. May be able to run more frequently
